Emergency Fund vs Investing: Which Should Come First?

Emergency Fund vs Investing: Which Should Come First?

Imagine investing your last ₦200,000 in the stock market. Two weeks later, your car breaks down, and the repair costs ₦180,000. You’re forced to sell your investments at a loss just to get back to work.

This is exactly why the emergency fund vs investing debate matters. In this post, we will look the importance of each one and why you  need them.

What Is an Emergency Fund?

An emergency fund is money set aside for unexpected expenses such as medical bills, car repairs, job loss, urgent home repairs and family emergencies

The goal is to avoid borrowing or selling investments when life happens.

Why it Should Usually Come First

Investments can go up and down. Your emergency fund should be safe and easily accessible. A good target is 3–6 months of essential expenses.

For example:

Rent: ₦150,000

Food: ₦80,000

Transport: ₦40,000

Utilities: ₦30,000

Monthly essentials = ₦300,000

Aim for ₦900,000–₦1.8 million in your emergency fund.

Where Should You Keep It?

Consider a High-yield savings accounts, money market funds, or Treasury bills or other low-risk, liquid accounts

Avoid locking emergency money in volatile investments.

When Can You Start Investing?

You don’t need to wait until your emergency fund is perfect.

A practical approach is:

Step 1

First: Save ₦100k–₦200k as a starter emergency fund.

Step 2

Build: Begin investing 10–20% of your income.

Step 3

Grow; Continue building the emergency fund until it reaches 3–6 months of expenses.

A Simple Rule

No emergency fund + high debt? Save first.

Small emergency fund + stable income? Save and invest together.

Fully funded emergency fund? Focus more aggressively on investing.

Conclusion

If I had to choose only one, I’d build an emergency fund first. Investing is how you grow wealth; an emergency fund is what keeps a temporary problem from becoming a financial disaster. The best investors are not just people who earn high returns—they’re people who can stay invested when emergencies happen.
